Protection decides what a claim can reach before it reaches the family.

Every other pillar assumes the assets are still there. This is the one that decides whether they are. Not insurance, which pays after a loss — ownership, which determines whether the loss arrives at your door at all.

⎯ The Four Levels

Most families own everything in one place and have never tested what that means.

Protection is not a product you buy. It is four layers of ownership decisions, and the ones that matter most cost almost nothing to put right — but only while nothing has happened yet.

One

Separation that is real, not just filed

An entity protects nothing if its money and yours move through the same account, or if its records exist only in a drawer. Commingling is what lets a claim reach past the company to the owner, and it is the most common failure in this pillar by a wide margin.

Two

One activity, one box

The operating business, each property, the vehicles, the equipment. The riskiest thing a family owns should never sit beside the most valuable thing it owns. Separating them costs a filing fee. Not separating them can cost everything at once.

Three

What the law protects on its own

Some assets are shielded by statute rather than by structure — retirement accounts, homestead, and for married couples in certain states, how an asset is jointly titled. The rules differ sharply by state, and most owners assume considerably more protection than they actually hold.

Four

Timing, which governs all of it

Structure built after a claim becomes foreseeable can be unwound by a court, and moving assets late is worse than not moving them at all. Everything here works on one condition: that it existed before anything happened.

One

What you actually own

Beyond the workplace plan and the brokerage account sits everything most families never see: private equity, private credit, venture, direct real estate, and real assets held as insurance rather than income. The dividing line is not risk. It is time — how long you can afford to have capital committed.

Two

Where you hold it

The accounts are containers. They decide how your returns are taxed; they do not decide what you own. The same portfolio, split differently across taxable, deferred and tax-free accounts, can leave two families with materially different amounts after tax. This is the level almost nobody is walked through.

Three

What you owe against it

Every asset decision is also a liability decision. What you borrowed, at what rate, on what terms, against what collateral — and whether the asset out-earns the loan. Managed together with the ownership side, liabilities accelerate growth. Managed apart, they end it.

Four

What it costs to hold

Fees, turnover, tax drag and the difference between a stated return and a real one. These compound as reliably as returns do, and in the opposite direction.

The goal is not to be untouchable. It is to be uncollectable.

Nothing legitimate makes a family immune from claims. What good structure does is change the arithmetic of pursuing one.

Assets held inside the right entity are not simply handed over. A creditor who wins receives an order against distributions — and then waits for distributions a prudent manager has no obligation to make.

Claims are commercial decisions. When what can actually be collected is small, slow and uncertain, matters settle earlier, on better terms, and some are never brought at all. That is the honest promise of this pillar: not a wall nobody can cross, but a structure that makes crossing it not worth the walk.

ONE CLAIM, TWO STRUCTURES
WITHOUT SEPARATION

ALL OF IT IS REACHABLE
WITH SEPARATION

Each activity in
its own entity

ONE BOX IS REACHABLE

The separation costs roughly a filing fee. It only works on one condition: that it existed before anything happened. Outcomes depend on facts, conduct and state law.

⎯ In practice

What changes when this pillar is actually managed

Not more entities. The right ones, holding the right things, in a way that holds up.

One event stays one event

A claim against a property, a vehicle or a business line reaches that box and stops there, instead of running through everything the family owns.

You know what is exposed and what is not

A clear reading of which assets are protected by statute, which by structure, and which only feel protected because nobody ever checked.

The structure survives examination

Separate accounts, current agreements, real business purpose and records that match reality — so the separation holds when someone tests it.

It was built before you needed it

Put in place while nothing is pending, which is the only condition under which any of it works.

⎯ How This Process Works

How the work happens

Three stages, in order. Nobody is asked to commit to the third before the first two have told them whether it is warranted.

01

Stage One · Complimentary

Wealth Resilience Assessment

Forty questions, five for each pillar. Ten minutes. It shows you where the gaps, leaks and risks are across your whole financial picture — whether or not you ever become a client.

02

Stage two · Paid Planning Engagement

Wealth Resilience Blueprint

A written plan built on your facts: what the gaps are costing, what closing them is worth, the order the work should happen in, and who does what.

03

Stage three · by recommendation

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with tax managed across the whole year rather than reported once. Scope is set by the firm after the Blueprint establishes what the circumstances require — not selected from a menu.

03
STAGE THREE · BY RECOMMENDATION

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with the structure reviewed as assets, risks and states change — rather than set up once and left to drift out of date.

Before any advisory engagement begins, we tell you in dollars what we expect the work to return. Our benchmark is three times the fee. Where we cannot see that clearly, we recommend a narrower scope, or none.

⎯ Pillar Boundaries

Where estate ends and the other pillars begin

Protection, Entity and Insurance are constantly mistaken for one another. They use overlapping tools and answer completely different questions, and a family can be strong in one while wide open in the next.

Investment

this pillar

What does the capital do, and what does it cost to hold it?

Tax

How much of the return survives, and in which year?

Liquidity

What can be turned into cash, and how quickly?

We do not manage money or sell investment products. This pillar is the structure, the tax position and the coordination around whatever you own and whoever manages it.

CONNECTED PILLAR

Entity

Does this change how the income is earned and taxed?

THIS PILLAR

Protection

What could a creditor actually reach?

CONNECTED PILLAR

Insurance

Who absorbs the loss once it has already happened?

Entities are formed and agreements drafted by licensed counsel in the relevant state. This pillar is the architecture underneath — what should sit in which box, what each arrangement costs to run, and the coordination that keeps the tax, entity and estate decisions aligned with it.

⎯ Client Services

Find out where this pillar actually stands.

The Assessment takes ten minutes and gives you the questions, not generic answers — because the right answers depend on your entity, your state, your assets and your family.

Self-Guided

Take the Assessment

Forty yes-or-no questions across all eight pillars. Ten minutes, complimentary, and yours to keep.

Guided

Speak to our team

A short call to review where you stand and whether there is work worth doing. No preparation needed.
