Deen Cadi CPA, PLLC

Investment decides what the capital does once you have kept it.

Most families manage one side of a two-sided problem. They watch what they own and leave what they owe to whoever arranged it, and they choose investments without deciding which account should hold them. The goal was never to accumulate assets. It was to build net worth, and net worth is both halves at once.

⎯ The Four Levels

Owning good assets is not the same as building wealth.

This pillar is not stock selection, and it is not a market view. It is four separate levels of decision, and most families operate on the first without knowing the other three exist.

One

What you actually own

Beyond the workplace plan and the brokerage account sits everything most families never see: private equity, private credit, venture, direct real estate, and real assets held as insurance rather than income. The dividing line is not risk. It is time — how long you can afford to have capital committed.

Two

Where you hold it

The accounts are containers. They decide how your returns are taxed; they do not decide what you own. The same portfolio, split differently across taxable, deferred and tax-free accounts, can leave two families with materially different amounts after tax. This is the level almost nobody is walked through.

Three

What you owe against it

Every asset decision is also a liability decision. What you borrowed, at what rate, on what terms, against what collateral — and whether the asset out-earns the loan. Managed together with the ownership side, liabilities accelerate growth. Managed apart, they end it.

Four

What it costs to hold

Fees, turnover, tax drag and the difference between a stated return and a real one. These compound as reliably as returns do, and in the opposite direction.

Four

What it costs to hold

Fees, turnover, tax drag and the difference between a stated return and a real one. These compound as reliably as returns do, and in the opposite direction.

$1 million, compounding for thirty years
At 7%, before anything $7.6M
After a 1% annual fee $5.7M
After fee and 1% annual tax drag $4.3M
In today’s money, at 2.5% inflation $2.1M
Fees and tax are the two you can do something about, and together they take 43% of the result. Inflation is not a cost you pay. It is the measuring stick changing underneath all of it.

After tax and after inflation is the only return that exists.

A stated return is not a result. What reaches the family is what remains after the tax on it and the inflation against it.

Earn five percent, pay tax at the top marginal rate on it, and lose four percent to inflation, and the family is going backwards while the statement shows a gain. The same position, held in the right container, can be the difference between falling behind and staying ahead — without changing a single holding.

And some positions are judged on what they protect rather than what they pay. A real asset that produces no income can still be the correct holding, for the same reason a fire door is not evaluated on its rental yield.

⎯ In practice

What changes when this pillar is actually managed

Not better investments. A coherent balance sheet.

Both halves move together

Assets and liabilities reviewed as one position, so that borrowing is matched to what it funds — in rate, in term, and in what happens if the asset falls in value.

Every holding sits where the code treats it best

Ordinary income sheltered where it is taxed annually. Long-held equity, real estate and qualifying business stock where the preferential rates, depreciation and the step-up at death can reach them.

The real return is visible

Positions measured after tax and after inflation, in writing, so that performance is assessed on what the family keeps rather than what the statement reports.

Nothing depends on a single rule

Structures built to survive a change in rates, brackets or provisions — because the families who came through 1986 were not the ones who guessed right.

⎯ How This Process Works

How the work happens

Three stages, in order. Nobody is asked to commit to the third before the first two have told them whether it is warranted.

01

Stage One · Complimentary

Wealth Resilience Assessment

Forty questions, five for each pillar. Ten minutes. It shows you where the gaps, leaks and risks are across your whole financial picture — whether or not you ever become a client.

02

Stage two · Paid Planning Engagement

Wealth Resilience Blueprint

A written plan built on your facts: what the gaps are costing, what closing them is worth, the order the work should happen in, and who does what.

03

Stage three · by recommendation

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with tax managed across the whole year rather than reported once. Scope is set by the firm after the Blueprint establishes what the circumstances require — not selected from a menu.

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with tax managed across the whole year rather than reported once. Scope is set by the firm after the Blueprint establishes what the circumstances require — not selected from a menu.

Before any advisory engagement begins, we tell you in dollars what we expect the work to return. Our benchmark is three times the fee. Where we cannot see that clearly, we recommend a narrower scope, or none.

⎯ Pillar Boundaries

Where investment ends and the other pillars begin

Investment, Tax and Liquidity are answered by the same holdings for entirely different reasons. Families get into trouble when a portfolio is asked to serve all three at once, and nobody checks whether it can.

THIS PILLAR

Investment

What does the capital do, and what does it cost to hold it?

We do not manage money or sell investment products. This pillar is the structure, the tax position and the coordination around whatever you own and whoever manages it.

How much of the return survives, and in which year?
