Legacy decides what the wealth is for after you stop deciding.

Most families treat this as the part that happens at the end. It is the only pillar that has to be built while you are still here to explain it, and the only one where doing nothing is itself a decision — taken on your behalf, by a probate court and whoever speaks loudest afterwards.

⎯ The Four Levels

A legacy is not what is left. It is what was decided.

Legacy is not sentiment, and it is not the will. It is four decisions, and a family can have flawless documents while none of the four has ever been made.

One

What the wealth is actually for

Written down, in your own words, in a form that outlives you. Unstated intent gets replaced by whatever the heirs assume it was, and they will assume different things from one another.

Two

Whether anything requires them to decide together

Nothing in a will obliges your children to sit in the same room again. A structure with a board, terms, votes and minutes is the only thing that compels a next generation to keep meeting — and dividing assets among people who share no remaining obligation produces exactly that.

Three

How the family gives

A cheque is a transaction. A foundation or a family fund is an institution the next generation helps run, and for most families it is the only apprenticeship in stewardship they will ever build.

Four

Whether a successor is prepared or merely named

Naming transfers authority. It does not transfer judgement, and judgement is only built where mistakes are still survivable — which means while you are alive to watch them.

One

What you actually own

Beyond the workplace plan and the brokerage account sits everything most families never see: private equity, private credit, venture, direct real estate, and real assets held as insurance rather than income. The dividing line is not risk. It is time — how long you can afford to have capital committed.

Two

Where you hold it

The accounts are containers. They decide how your returns are taxed; they do not decide what you own. The same portfolio, split differently across taxable, deferred and tax-free accounts, can leave two families with materially different amounts after tax. This is the level almost nobody is walked through.

Three

What you owe against it

Every asset decision is also a liability decision. What you borrowed, at what rate, on what terms, against what collateral — and whether the asset out-earns the loan. Managed together with the ownership side, liabilities accelerate growth. Managed apart, they end it.

Four

What it costs to hold

Fees, turnover, tax drag and the difference between a stated return and a real one. These compound as reliably as returns do, and in the opposite direction.

The widely cited pattern from research across more than three thousand families. The figures are debated; the direction is not. It is almost never the market that takes it.

A legacy left to one person is only as safe as that one person.

One bad decision, one divorce, one accident, one heir who never cared. An institution is built so that none of those can undo it.

That is the difference between inheritance and legacy. Inheritance is a transfer, and it is finished the moment it completes. An institution outlasts the founder and keeps doing what the founder meant it to do.

It is also why the families still standing after a century did not plan to leave money. They built something that required the next generation to show up — and then taught them how.

⎯ In practice

What changes when this pillar is actually managed

Not a longer will. A structure the next generation has a role inside.

The purpose is on paper

One page, in your words, that keeps directing decisions you will never see — and that an heir can read when you are not there to be asked.

There is a table, and it has to be attended

A governance structure with real decisions, real records and real consequences, so the family keeps meeting after the reason to gather is gone.

Giving builds the family as well as the cause

A charitable structure the next generation helps run, chosen with the tax treatment understood rather than discovered afterwards.

Successors are prepared, not announced

Responsibility handed over in stages, while the founder is present to correct course and while mistakes are still small enough to be lessons.

⎯ How This Process Works

How the work happens

Three stages, in order. Nobody is asked to commit to the third before the first two have told them whether it is warranted.

01

Stage One · Complimentary

Wealth Resilience Assessment

Forty questions, five for each pillar. Ten minutes. It shows you where the gaps, leaks and risks are across your whole financial picture — whether or not you ever become a client.

02

Stage two · Paid Planning Engagement

Wealth Resilience Blueprint

A written plan built on your facts: what the gaps are costing, what closing them is worth, the order the work should happen in, and who does what.

03

Stage three · by recommendation

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with tax managed across the whole year rather than reported once. Scope is set by the firm after the Blueprint establishes what the circumstances require — not selected from a menu.

03
STAGE THREE · BY RECOMMENDATION

Ascend

The ongoing advisory relationship, with the governance structure, the giving and the next generation's role reviewed as the family changes — rather than settled once and left to drift.

Before any advisory engagement begins, we tell you in dollars what we expect the work to return. Our benchmark is three times the fee. Where we cannot see that clearly, we recommend a narrower scope, or none.

⎯ Pillar Boundaries

Where legacy ends and the other pillars begin

Legacy, Estate and Protection are constantly collapsed into one another. Estate moves the assets, Protection keeps them reachable only by the family, and Legacy decides what any of it was for.

Estate

What passes, to whom, and by which document?

THIS PILLAR

Legacy

What is the wealth for, and who carries that after you?

Protection

What could a claim reach before it reaches the family?

Documents and charitable entities are drafted and formed by licensed counsel. This pillar is the design of the governance, the tax treatment of the giving, and the coordination that keeps the estate, entity and protection decisions pointing the same way.

Investment

this pillar

What does the capital do, and what does it cost to hold it?

Tax

How much of the return survives, and in which year?

Liquidity

What can be turned into cash, and how quickly?

We do not manage money or sell investment products. This pillar is the structure, the tax position and the coordination around whatever you own and whoever manages it.
